- Luleå University of Technology, is well-known for its good knowledge in mining and we have much to learn from you. Maybe we can have an exchange program in mining with Luleå University of Technology or perhaps a special higher mining programme, said Ambassador HE Mr. Lameck Nthekela, immediately after the meeting.
On the way from the meeting room, Botswana's Ambassador HE Mr. Lameck Nthekela, pointed that it is of great importance for an educational and research cooperation with Luleå University of Technology, that Swedish mining-related companies such as ABB, Scania and Atlas Copco, already are established in Botswana. The main focus of this first meeting was, mine-related issues.
- The fact that we managed to get an appointment so quickly, where almost everyone could be in place bodes well for future cooperation, said Ambassador HE Mr. Lameck Nthekela.
New appointment in two weeks
In two weeks Johan Sterte, Vice-Chancellor at Luleå University of Technology along with several principals from the Swedish universities will visit of South Africa and Botswana, on the initiative of The Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Highet Education (STINT). Vice - Chancellor Johan Sterte will seize the opportunity to discuss the question of a possible future cooperation between Botswana and Luleå University of Technology.
There is a strong political interest in Sweden with a continued commitment to Botswana as a nation. There is currently a desperate need for foreign help to build up higher education and research in mining in the country. Such domestic skills are lacking in Botswana today, despite its leading position in the world when it comes to diamond mining. Mining in the country, of course, also consists of copper, gold, nickel and soda ash.
- Luleå University of Technology is Sweden’s centre for research and education which focuses on mining, so it is natural to work with us. We also see this as an opportunity for us to learn more about diamond mining, says John Sterte, Vice Chancellor at Luleå University.
