PhD student on prestigious Forbes list

Published: 14 February 2019

Álvaro Soria-Salinas, PhD student in Space Technology at Luleå University of Technology, is featured on Forbes 30 under 30 list. – I was very surprised and happy, says Álvaro Soria-Salinas.

The 2019 version of Forbes 30 under 30 Europe list, is an impressive odyssey of 300 young people, divided into ten categories such as Art and culture, Finance and Social entrepreneurs. They are, as Forbes describes it, “a collection of bold risk-takers bringing new ideas to Europe”. Álvaro Soria-Salinas is listed in the Science and Healthcare category.

– I am actually feeling overwhelmed; I did not expect this kind of impact.

Álvaro Soria-Salinas is a PhD student in the group of Atmospheric Science. Among other things, he is involved in the development of the instrument HABIT that will go to Mars on ESA’s ExoMars2020 Mission. Last fall he was managing a team that entered the ESA programme Fly Your Thesis! The team was successful and together with their experiment PVT GAMERS, they participated in the 70th ESA parabolic flight campaign and experienced weightlessness.

– Everything I have achieved I owe to the group of Atmospheric Science and my supervisor Professor Maria-Paz Zorzano Mier. It is a small research group but we are all eager and hungry to get things done. You always learn something new and constantly develop yourself, Álvaro Soria-Salinas explains.

What will this list position mean to you in a longer run?

The future will tell! However, since I am aiming at working in the space industry after finishing my PhD, I am sure it is a good thing to have on my resume. In addition, the magazine is organizing many events where people on the list are supposed to meet each other. That might give good opportunities to connect with people interested in the same field as me.
