Research on Biofuels secured

Efforts to develop renewable fuels through research at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) is secured with a new decision by the Swedish Energy Agency. The decision means funding for at least 2.5 years of extensive research programs at the university and the operation of the university's own gasification plant LTU Green Fuels

- We have been waiting for this, and thus, the Swedish Energy Agency has pointed out the direction, which means that we can continue to conduct leading research on green fuels and chemicals. It is extremely gratifying and means we can now concentrate on realizing an ambitious research program, says John Sterte, vice chancellor at Luleå University.

The total budget for the program is 158 million SEK for the period December 2013 - May 2016. The Swedish Energy Agency is responsible for 112 million SEK, the County Board of SEK 2.5 million and the 14 research partners (LTU is one of them) account for the remaining sum.

- LTU Biosyngas Center is an open research center and our goal is to gradually add projects suitable to be implemented on a pilot scale or in a side stream from the process in its various stages. New academic and industrial partners are welcome to use the facility for research that will help to reduce dependence on fossil raw materials and fuels, says Richard Gebart, professor at Luleå University of Technology.

FACTS:
The theme of the research is broadening the raw material base, the efficiency of sub-processes and reduced manufacturing costs. The subprojects involves gasification of pyrolysis oil and wood powder, gas purification, catalytic conversion of synthesis gas, materials for hot alkaline environments and field trials with BioDME and Biomethanol from the plant.
Stakeholders: Chemrec, Haldor Topsoe, Smurfit Kappa, Sveaskog, Holmen, Södra, Biogreen, Volvo, Preem, Flogas, Perstorp, ETC, Aga, LTU Green Fuels
