CEO and ”Space doctor” new Alumni of the year

They are former students at Luleå University of Technology, with careers as "space doctor" and CEO at a global engineering and design company. Now, Ella Carlsson Sjöberg and Jonas Gustavsson have been appointed alumni of the year at their Alma mater.

Alumni of the Year is an award to recognize the achievements of former students at Luleå University of Technology.

The alumni of the year 2018 are Ella Carlsson Sjöberg, Acting director of The Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF), and Jonas Gustavsson, President and CEO of ÅF, a global company with 10,000 employees and offices in over 30 countries.

– It is a great honor for me to achieve this award. It feels incredibly rewarding and inspiring! Luleå University of Technology has a special place in my heart, a place where I got friends for life, and a platform that helped me ward off my space dreams, says Ella Carlsson Sjöberg, PhD in Space Physics also known as "Sweden's Mars Doctor".

– As a proud former student at Luleå University of Technology, I am honored to be one of this year's Alumnus of the year. I had a very good time at the University and I’m glad to follow the positive development of Luleå University of Technology, says Jonas Gustavsson, head of ÅF.

The jury nominating this year's alumni includes representatives from Luleå University of Technology, Luleå Studentkår, Teknologkåren at Luleå University of Technology and LTU Business.

The motivations for 2018 winners are:

"Ella Carlsson Sjöberg has had a highly successful career after graduating from the Master Programme in Space Engineering at Luleå University of Technology, and today she is the Acting director of The Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF). Ella has a PhD in Space Physics from the Swedish National Graduate School of Space Technology at Luleå University of Technology and her area of research is the planet Mars. She has worked in the Armed Forces and at Esrange, Sweden's European Space and Sounding Rocket Range. Ella is a very worthy representative of alumni at Luleå University of Technology."

"Jonas Gustavsson has had a highly successful career, both in Sweden and internationally, after graduating from the Master Programme in Mechanical Engineering at Luleå University of Technology. Today he is the President and CEO of global engineering and design company ÅF. He has also had leading positions at ABB, Bombardier and Sandvik. Jonas is a very worthy representative of alumni at Luleå University of Technology."

Jonas Gustavsson and Ella Carlsson Sjöberg will be in Luleå for the Awards ceremony at Vetenskapens hus on November 6th.
