Published: 23 January 2020

Skills development, education, research and innovation. These are the areas included in the letter of intent on strategic collaboration that Luleå University of Technology and Kiruna Municipality have signed.

The purpose of the collaboration is to increase the competitiveness and attractiveness of both Kiruna Municipality and the University. The activities decided will lead to increased quality in skills development and lifelong learning, in research and in innovation, which in turn will lead to sustainable growth and increased competitiveness for both parties.

– As one of our four university locations, Kiruna is a very important place for us - we have both education and research at the Space Campus in Kiruna. I am very pleased that we are developing our cooperation with Kiruna Municipality. We have many common interests in large and important areas such as space and mining, says Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn, vice-chancellor of Luleå University of Technology.

Developed supply of skills

The agreement states that Luleå University of Technology is Kiruna Municipality's first choice as an academic partner for contract education. Flexible forms of training for already employed persons, such as job training and distance education, are of great importance, as is the joint structure of learning environments. With a stronger collaboration, the University and Kiruna Municipality want to lay the foundations for a developed supply of skills.

Gunnar Selberg, mayor of Kiruna, welcomes the new strategic cooperation.
– Luleå University of Technology is a very important partner in our ambition to develop Kiruna. We know that post-secondary education is a very important factor for developing a municipality, and we see that Luleå University of Technology can contribute tremendously. I hope that the educational offerings in Kiruna will be further strengthened and that we get even more students som come here. Some of them will hopefully remain in Kiruna, he says.
