A new project will lead to better utilization of the electricity grid

In a new project together with Skellefteå Kraft, the Electric Power Engineering group will develop a method for quantifying opportunities and limitations of dynamic line rating to make increase the secure transmission capacity in subtransmission electricity networks.

– The research will help increase the transmission capacity in the power grid without the need to build new power lines or substations and without jeopardizing reliability and operational security, says Math Bollen, Chaired Professor of Electrical Power Engineering at Luleå University of Technology in Skellefteå.

Less need for expansion

The main stakeholders in the project are the electricity network operators, both subtransmission (regional) and transmission networks. That dynamic line rating can increase the amount of energy transmitted through the electricity network has been demonstrated in previous studies. What is missing is a way of comparing classic and modern solutions with regard to their ability to maintain the operational security of the network as well as the reliability for the end-user.

– In the long term, application of methods such as dynamic line rating will reduce the need for network expansion, utilization rates can be increased, and making it will become easier for new network users to connect to the network. The project will also lead to recommendations regarding data collection of availability of components in order to perform the calculations, says Math Bollen.

To the benefit of several stakeholders

The project will also benefit the regulatory authority when assessing the need for extension of the regional network. There must be a balance between costs and performance.

Smart power grid solutions like dynamic line rating will also benefit large customers in the grid, as it has the potential to be cheaper and faster than building new lines and substations. But there are also risks that so far have not been quantified. A method of calculating reliability is needed to compare the risks with different solutions.

For developers of smart grid technology, the stochastic models resulting from the project can clarify which components of the dynamic line rating system that have the greatest impact on reliability.

Foreign network operators participate

The main financier in the project is Skellefteå Kraft, and the Swedish Energy Agency and Energiforsk – the Swedish Energy Research Centre – are also financiers. From Luleå University of Technology, Math Bollen, Lars Abrahamsson and a PhD student will work in close collaboration with Skellefteå Kraft Elnät. A reference group with representatives from network operators in Sweden, the Netherlands and the US will be a knowledge resource and give input to the more practical parts of the project.
