According to the National Board of Health and Welfare's latest report, almost half, 47 percent, of all specialist nurses employed in health care are 55 years or older. This means that within the next 15 years, a large proportion of today's existing specialist nurses will retire.
– The demand for specialist nurses is greater than for other professions, when the proportion of specialized nurses decreased while the health care has become increasingly complex. In the long-term work of increase specialized nurses, we are involved in the inventory of the need for specialized nurses within the county and municipality. In a dialogue, we try to start the specialized programmes where there is a shortage of staff, says Åsa Engström, professor of Nursing at Luleå University of Technology.
Collaboration between the university and employers who offer clinical education for students is another important part of the long-term work. There is also cooperation including shared services with adjuncts and the programmes design.
Information meeting for interested nurses
Since some years back, trainee positions have existed at the intensive care unit at Sunderby hospital. Now the opportunity expands to anesthesia and surgery. Last week, an information meeting was held on Sunderby hospital for nurses who are interested in studying specialist programmes in anesthesia, surgery and intensive care. The meeting was initiated by the care manager Jeanette Viklund, Norrbotten County Council, which together with the heads of units and specialized nurses informed about the work, the possibility of trainee and wages during the training period.
– The trainee positions we had in intensive care has worked out well as an introduction to the work and then read further specialist studies. Now the opportunity expands for nurses interested in anesthesia and surgery. The initiative is part of our long-term planning to attract and retain staff, says Jeanette Viklund.

"The only way to recruit"
Filip Pääjärvi worked as a trainee for about eight months in the intensive care unit at Sunderby Hospital before joining the Luleå University of Technology specialist nurse education specializing in intensive care.
– I learned routines, common procedures and got an insight into the business. It meant I had to try and see if the profession was something for me. When I started the education, I had gathered experience and got a head start.
He also received salary during training and was able to focus on their studies without having to compromise on other things or work a lot during the training.
– I think it is a good concept. You can not recruit in another way, says Filip Pääjärvi, who now works in intensive care at Sunderby hospital.
