More men at Teacher Education Programme

Luleå University of Technology's Supplementary Study Programme in Education is popular – especially among men, who are in the majority of the new students in the autumn semester of 2017.

A clear majority of the teachers at Swedish schools are women – according to Statistics Sweden's latest figures (from 2015), 76% of the country's primary school teachers are women. According to the same survey, the proportion of male teachers in Sweden has decreased in the last 25 years. 

But at Luleå University of Technology's Supplementary Study Programme in Education, 38 of 62 students who started their studies in the autumn semester of 2017 are men. A year earlier, 26 of the new students were women and 23 men.

– We see a shift. We have been working for a long time to get more men to go into teaching and it's very rewarding to see that so many men have found this education, says Lisbeth Lindström, Associate Professor in Education at Luleå University of Technology.

Many students from Norrbotten

Petter Esberg, 35, from Boden is a biologist and has previously worked at the County Administrative Board in Norrbotten. After trying on teaching, he has now started studying at Luleå University of Technology's Supplementary Study Programme in Education.

– The fact that the programme is given as a distance education was crucial for me, he says, adding that teaching "probably can become a calling" for him.

Lisbeth Lindström emphasizes the fact that 26 percent of the new students at the programme are from Norrbotten.

– It will be a good teacher contribution to the region, she says.
