– Although the county councils and the regions aim to reduce the number of temporarily hired staff, they are currently dependent on them. We think it is important to see how this affects workplaces and the conditions for learning and development, both at individual and organizational levels, says Åsa Engström, Professor in Nursing at Luleå University of Technology.
Changing labor market
She and Anna Berg Jansson, researcher in Human Work Science, encourage nurses and midwives who work as temporary hired staff to participate in a new survey, which is part of a larger research project about learning and development conditions on an increasingly flexible labor market. The project is funded by Forte, the Swedish Research Council for Health, Working life and Welfare.
– Nurse's learning is of great importance for the quality and development of the healthcare, as well as an important part of a sustainable work environment. We need to increase knowledge about how temporary staffing affects the conditions for learning and development for both temporary and permanent employees, says Anna Berg Jansson.
