Master Thesis Rewarded with Byggstenen

Published: 14 April 2021

With his master thesis work, "Waste in the construction industry: A case study of the production process for road construction", Axel Bergbom has highlighted how productivity and long-term sustainability can go hand in hand in the construction industry and has been rewarded with Byggstenen from Norrbotten's Builders' Association.

Byggstenen is a travel scholarship awarded by Norrbottens Byggarbetsgivares Development fund. The prize is awarded to, among other things, a completed master’s in civil engineering specializing in Lean Construction at Luleå University of Technology. The travel scholarship is an encouragement to increase additional interest and knowledge in the construction industry.

"I think Axel deserves the award, as the degree project is based on productivity and sustainability in the construction engineering industry, which is still in many ways more unexplored than, for example, housebuilding. Especially in construction supply chain management", says Axel's supervisor Jarkko Erikshammar, adjunct Lecturer in the division of Industrialized and sustainable construction at Luleå University of Technology. This is the second time one of my students receives the award and for me it is a proof that we research and teach in relevant areas.

Jarkko Erikshammar and Axel Bergbom have continued to work with the material and presented preliminary results at PLAN Conference 2020 in the form of a conference article.

"This is an interesting area. I hope we can continue to work on this in some form in the future. We need a proper understanding of waste in the construction engineering", concludes Jarkko Erikshammar in the same way as has been done previously in house production.
