Four times more applicants on web-based programme

Published: 24 April 2017

Luleå University of Technology is the first Swedish university offering a fully online education for specialist nurse in psychiatric care. The preliminary application numbers shows a great interest in the programme.

163 people have applied to the specialist nursing program with focus psychiatric care at Luleå University of Technology. Of these, 94 entered as their first choice shows the preliminary statistics from the University and College Council after the deadline for the autumn semster now expired. This programme is thus far the most popular compared with corresponding programs in other universities.

– Of course it is very gratifying that our expectations of demand for an online specialist proved to be correct. This means more than four times the number of first-choice applicants compared to when we last gave the programme in ordinary distance format, says programme director Sebastian Gabrielsson.

The new programme is entirely online without physical presence on campus. The first two semesters consist of theoretical studies at half speed. The third and final semester studies are conducted at full speed in the form of clinical education (internship) in psychiatric care, and the students also do a Master thesis. Responsible teachers are Git-Marie Ejneborn Looi and Sebastian Gabrielsson, lecturers in Nursing at Luleå University of Technology. Both are specialized nurses in psychiatric care with many years of experience in teaching, research and clinical work.
