New students welcomed to the university

Published: 16 August 2017

The expectations were high when the new students arrived at Luleå University of Technology for their study start. They were welcomed by Vice-chancellor Johan Sterte.

– We are doing our best to ensure that you will have a good time here at the university. The university studies require discipline and dedication and I recommend you to attend lectures, keep in touch with your teachers, work with your friends and engage in the student unions. It is important to find a balance between study and leisure, he says.

Expectant students

Early in the morning, the university was filled with new students, their guides, "phösare", in overalls and sunglasses and staff ready to support and answer all kinds of questions.

In Aula Aurora, expectant and excited students took place to get an introduction of the university and the programmes, but also about what Luleå as a city has to offer with the archipelago, nature, ice rinks, basketball, hockey and business life.

Mia Oldenburg, manager for the university's student service, and her colleagues presented all the services that are available to assist and support students during their study period.

"Engage and get new friends"

The chairman of the Student union of engineering, Konrad Rundqvist, talked about the involvement in the student unions and encouraged the new students to become active members and make new friends.

– During the summer, the sun is shining all day around here in Luleå, but later in the year it becomes darker and darker and the friends becomes a light in your life, he says.

Phösarna, older students in overalls and sunglasses, were then ready to take students around the university and lead them into student life.
