Students are examined during an staged car accident

Last week specialist programs focusing on ambulance care, intensive care and anesthesia at Luleå University of Technology conducted a joint final exam with two scenarios where two cars have collided.

– Being able to lead, organize, prioritize and make the best decisions when several people suffered a major accident are the skills required as a specialist trained nurse in ambulance, anesthesia and intensive care. Whether you work in an ambulance or at a hospital, you can end up in this situation at any time, and then they need know what, how and why the work will be carried out. Collaboration with the rescue service must also be trained and are included in this examination, says Åsa Engström, education director at Luleå University of Technology.

The students were assessed on the basis of different criteria in which ambulance nursing students should guide and distribute the work of the accident while intensive care and amnesia students will take care of the 17 injured on site. A total of 34 students graduate, and during the exercise half of the students act healthcare professionals and the other half act njured patients.

Even the rescue service is in place for the exercise. They participate with a fire truck and five firefighters who will cut car roofs and support the bets on the accident site.

– Priority, assessment and action issues are becoming increasingly important and more difficult in these specialties with complex situations and sometimes limited resources. In the field of ambulance operations, people are increasingly faced with issues like who needs care the most and first, but sometimes also make the difficult assessment that the patient may not need to go to the hospital in an amulance, says university lecturer Christer Kågström at Luleå University of Technology.
