Cheaper bus cards for students

Published: 18 May 2017

From next year, bus rides will be cheaper for students at Luleå University of Technology.

– It is very positive that it will be cheaper and easier for our students to use the local traffic in Luleå. The students make up a large proportion of the population of Luleå and it is important that they can easily use sustainable transport options to go between the university, housing and leisure activities, says Johan Sterte, Vice-Chancellor of Luleå University of Technology.

The subsidized bus cards for students at Luleå University of Technology are part of Luleå municipality's budget for public transportation for the years 2018-2020, and are highlighted as a way to more closely link the university area with central Luleå. According to the municipality's draft budget, a bus line with electric buses will also be introduced between Porsön and Kronan.

Addressed for a long time

– For us at Luleå Student Union this is very good news. This is an important issue that our students have addressed for a long time. Previously, there has been a subsidized bus card for people up to 26 years old, but our students are in a varied age range and we welcome that all students will be included in the subsidization, says Carl Johan Granqvist, President of Luleå Student Union.

The exact model for the subsidization of the student’s bus cards has not been specified yet, but will be worked out by the municipality, Luleå University of Technology and the student unions together.

– We are pleased to see that our collaboration with the municipality and the university makes a difference and helps to make Luleå a better city for all students, says Carl Johan Granqvist.
