Build your career with strong industry connections

John Lindström is a Director, researcher and teacher with over 20 years of experience in industry. Read more about John and how he connects teaching to real-world cybersecurity challenges, how he collaborates with industry and what career opportunities are available after graduation.
Hello John! Can you tell us a little about yourself?
"I'm originally from Stockholm but now live in Luleå. One of the big advantages here is the quieter lifestyle, with less traffic and shorter commuting time, which makes for a more relaxed and less stressful everyday life. I live close to nature, with forest, river and ski tracks just around the corner, and I really appreciate being able to get to the mountains in just 3-4 hours by car, especially in the fall when the colors are at their most beautiful. During the winter, there are also plenty of high-quality indoor sports to follow, such as hockey and basketball. I myself have a strong connection to basketball, as I was involved in winning Plannja Basket's first Swedish Championship gold in 1996/97. This means that basketball is always close to my heart, even though I sometimes watch hockey too."
How has your experience in industry shaped the way you teach cybersecurity?
"With over 20 years of experience in various industries, tech companies and consulting, I have developed a deep understanding of what really works in practice. My teaching is therefore strongly rooted in reality, where each assignment and project is designed to reflect current challenges and needs in cybersecurity. You will not only gain a solid theoretical foundation, but also the practical knowledge required to solve real-world problems and conduct research projects relevant to today's rapidly changing digital landscape. My goal is to prepare you to become a prominent player in the cybersecurity field, ready to face the challenges of the future."
Can you give examples of real-life problems from industry that you include in your lectures?
"In my lectures, we work on real-world problems that directly reflect the challenges faced by today's businesses. For example, you will learn how to develop cybersecure IoT products and other connected devices – one of the most critical issues in today's digital world. We will cover how to securely transfer data to and from these products and how to effectively manage them remotely via the internet. By working on these real-world problems, you will gain the practical skills needed to protect digital systems and products, making you ready to meet market demands straight after graduation."
What are the career opportunities in cybersecurity, both globally and locally?
"Students have the opportunity to move on to exciting careers all over the world, thanks to the solid foundation they receive in our cybersecurity programme. With the skills and knowledge you develop here, you will be well prepared to take on challenges anywhere in the world, whether you want to work in large global companies, innovative start-ups or government agencies. While some countries have specific requirements and regulations, our programme gives you the flexibility and skills you need to adapt and succeed on a global scale."
What are the collaborations with companies within the programme and what opportunities do students have to network and get internships?
"These collaborations provide our students with valuable opportunities to make contacts, carry out projects and write theses that are directly linked to industry needs. We regularly receive requests from companies looking for our students' expertise, and we actively help match you with the right opportunity. In some cases, security clearances and Swedish citizenship may be required, especially in sensitive areas, but we always make sure you get the support you need to take advantage of these opportunities. These experiences will not only give you practical knowledge but also a head start in the job market through a valuable network and relevant work experience."
