Bothnia Edge-HPC Lab
Bothnia Edge–HPC Lab strengthens next-generation digital innovation by building a continuum-ready research platform/testbed that combines edge computing and High-Performance Computing (HPC). The lab enable researchers in developing, deploying, and evaluating AI applications and services that facilitate across edge ↔ on-prem/HPC environments.
What we build
The project develops a multi-tenant Edge–HPC platform that turns infrastructure into a usable research environment through five broad integrated building blocks:
- Identity & access – single sign-on style access, roles, and tenant isolation
- Networking – secure connectivity domains and routing boundaries between edge and HPC
- Workload orchestration – where jobs/services run (e.g., Slurm/Kubernetes/workflows)
- Data fabric – how data moves and is stored (object storage + parallel filesystem patterns)
- Observability + policy – monitoring, quotas, auditability, and reliability operations
Research and innovation focus
Bothnia Edge–HPC Lab enables research and validation of:
- Workload placement across the compute continuum (training and inference), quantifying trade-offs in latency, data locality, and compute availability
- Operational resilience for shared research platforms, including telemetry, runbook-driven incident response, and measurable reliability outcomes
- Reproducible experimentation on real infrastructure—supporting dependable benchmarking and repeatable evaluations for both academic and applied AI use cases
Activities and outputs
- Design and integration of a heterogeneous GPU Edge–HPC environment, including fabric-aware connectivity and platform foundations for multi-tenant operation
- Establishment of workflows, onboarding patterns, and reference deployments to help teams run real workloads end-to-end
- Workshops and collaboration support for researchers to experiment with continuum applications and services
