Johan Frishammar  was born in 1973 in Stockholm, Sweden. He was awarded a M.Sc. in business and economics in 2000, a licentiate in engineering in 2003, and a Ph.D. in industrial management in 2006. Promoted associate professor (docent) in 2009 and full professor of industrial management at Luleå University of Technology in 2011, working at the entrepreneurship and innovation research group. Married to Åsa and father to two wonderful kids, Filippa and Herman. Has a bleeding heart for golf and skiing, both downhill and cross-country.


My research focuses on management of innovation and technology on the project, firm, and interorganizational levels. Current and ongoing projects focus on the front-end of the innovation process, models for open- and distributed innovation, knowledge transfer and knowledge leakage in joint R&D projects, inter-organizational collaboration for innovation in new process technology, processes for product development and process development, new business models, and technology licensing. I’m currently acting as project manager for multiple research project, financed by Vinnova, the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, and directly from industry by means of collaboration with Boliden AB, Höganäs AB, LKAB, SSAB, and other leading firms. I have articles authored or co-authored in multiple international research journals, including articles in the California Management Review, Journal of Product Innovation Management, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Technovation, Journal of Engineering and Technology Management, International Studies of Management and Organization, Technological Forecasting & Social Change, Technology Analysis & Strategic Management, Journal of Small Business Management and International Journal of Technology Management.

Education and industry collaboration

Johan Frishammar is the centre director for the Promote research group at Luleå university of technology, a multi-disciplinary research group doing research into technology- and innovation management in the process industries. He has experience from teaching courses in organization theory, strategic management, theory of science, innovation management, technology development, and other subjects to both business and engineering students. He frequently serves as supervisor at the BS.C., Ms.C. and Ph.D. levels.

Johan also coordinates the doctoral programs at ETS.
