Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn has since 2002 a PhD in Information Systems from Luleå University of Technology where she is a professor within the same research area today.

Between 2007 and 2008, she was a Senior Researcher at Ericsson research. During her years at the university, she has been actively working towards the development of new programmes and research within digital service innovation. In 2011 she became Pro Vice-Chancellor and has since then worked with regional initiatives such as the establishments of data-centers and building up gamification as an area of research and operations. Bergvall-Kåreborn has also been engaged in initiatives for creating synergy between different types of testing, particularly testing in cold climates. She has a long experience of user participation in developing different information systems, and a special interest for distributed and user-driven development. Along with colleagues at the university, she developed the method FormIt which has earned international recognition, especially within the Living Lab research concept.
