– It's been interesting to work on a real project, and something different from what we usually do during our education, says Jennie Olausson, student at Bachelor Programme in Industrial Design Engineering at Luleå University of Technology.
During the fall, the students have studied how last year's University igloo was constructed, and they have now developed both the interior and exterior design. Other buildings made of ice such as Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi, Ice City in China and the igloo in Åre have also been part of their study. Emma Åsberg, who together with Jennie Olausson has developed the concept, says that they have asked both students and staff what they want from an environmentally friendly and sustainable meeting place in winter environment.
– We have listened to the users from the start. They want a place where to hang out, have a coffee on the patio or arrange meetings. The igloo will also become an attraction for the public and can attract international attention as we have many exchange students here, she says.
"Now we're just waiting for the snow"
The igloo, which they call the "Sphaere", will now be built outside Teknikens hus by students on the university's snow and ice course at the end of January. There is only one challenge.
– We need to have proper winter and 140 cubic meters of snow until the end of January, says Emma Åsberg.
