New way of spreading research knowledge

For the first time, participants in research studies have been invited to participate in a half-time check at Luleå University of Technology. It is a new way of sharing knowledge and giving participants an opportunity to take part in the results and participate in the discussion about the research.

– You get a better understanding of what the whole project is about. It's important to show a real result and to have that as a goal from the outset, so the research is useful. It is important to reach out to the knowledge of the clinics, which I understand can be a problem, says Agne Rustan, one of the 12 participants who wanted to take part of the results and participate in the discussions.

– It was very interesting to hear the discussions and to see the results. Especially to see the pictures on the muscle groups and how to train to achieve stability, says Birgitta Vikberg, one of the participants in the study.

Usually, it's only reviewers, supervisors, and direct colleagues who participate in a half-time check, which leads to a scientific discussion. Now the challenge for the PhD student was to show a scientific sharpness to the reviewers, but also make the results clear to a wider audience.

– Many of the participants have said they would like to know the results from the studies, and Mascha realized that the half-time check could be a good opportunity because the results were not only presented but also discussed in a broader context, says Lars Nyberg, Chaired Professor in Physiotherapy at Luleå Technical University.
– I think this experience encourages us to become more active in making more of our activities public and available to study participants and the general public.

Mascha Pauelsen's half-time check was the first at Luleå University of Technology, which have invited the participants from the study. She presented two implemented studies on elderly´s fall-related concerns and presented the plans for two upcoming studies.

– I think it is important that those who have provided data also get an opportunity to take part in the results. Therefore, I proposed to invite them. They asked a lot of good questions and it shows that they were interested. To me it was very rewarding to give back and see that there was a great interest, says Mascha Pauelsen, PhD student in physiotherapy.
