Fredrik Nikolajeff named IVA's prestigious 100 list

Published: 2 March 2020

Fredrik Nikolajeff, professor of Medical Technology at Luleå University of Technology, has been selected by the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, IVA, for this year's 100 list of outstanding researchers.
– My research is about sustainable health. We are working to make Parkinson's disease detectable at a very early stage, he says.

This year's theme for the prestigious 100 list, where Sweden's leading researchers are addressed, is sustainability. The researchers on the 100 list should conduct high-quality research that can be of great benefit to companies and society.
– I am happy and honored, says Fredrik Nikolajeff at the Department of Health Sciences.
Together with researcher Saroj Kumar, who works at a medical university in New Delhi, he is investigating whether Parkinson's disease can be detected even before the symptoms begin to appear.
– When symptoms such as shaking appear, the harmful molecular changes may have begun 20 years earlier. We hope that in the future, the disease can be diagnosed at a very early stage by capturing these molecular changes via a saliva test, says Fredrik Nikolajeff.

Collaboration with hospitals

The researchers are already working on saliva samples in India and Fredrik Nikolajeff expects equipment to be installed for the future work at Luleå University of Technology.
– We have a collaboration with hospitals in New Delhi and the Academic Hospital in Uppsala, now we are working to establish collaboration with Sunderby hospital as well.
The hope is to develop a precise diagnostic test that can help pharmaceutical companies develop brake medicines for Parkinson's disease and other dementia diseases.
– And before there are medicines developed, a test can also help people make lifestyle changes and prepare before the problems appear, says Fredrik Nikolajeff.
