Health promotion for over 50 000 children in Norrbotten

Published: 16 January 2018

In Norrbotten, as in Sweden as a whole, the psychological health issues among children and adolescents increases. Now, the Municipalities of Norrbotten, Region Norrbotten and Luleå University of Technology want to reverse the development through a new collaboration, Hälsoskolan (the Health School).

– We want to do something to make sure the 51,000 children and young people living in Norrbotten get the best opportunitie to feel good and live a healthy life, says Peter Waara, chairman of the R & D committee at the Municipalities of Norrbotten.

In the Health School, work is commenced across the organizational boundaries between the Municipalities of Norrbotten, Region Norrbotten and Luleå University of Technology to build a health-promoting cooperation organization. The Health School meets staff in school, social services and other organizations. Parents, students and the children and young people who are outside school and the labor market are also important for the project.

Collaboration on health

Norrbotten Municipalities has recruited Catrine Kostenius as a flexit researcher for three years. Catrine Kostenius is a Professor of Health Sciences at Luleå University of Technology and her research focuses on health promotion.

The work is also an important contribution to the continuation of the project Arctic Children, with universities and local actors from Norway, Finland, Russia and Sweden, which works for collaboration on health and school development.

– We know that health promotes learning and that a good learning environment in school also promotes health. We base our work on that knowledge, says Catrine Kostenius.

She will among other things, use the data from the health talks held with children by school nurses. Through co-operation with school nurses, Region Norrbotten has been able to report the development of health and living habits among children in Norrbotten, at municipal and county level for ten years. The health school strives for the health talks to be a tool for the systematic quality work of the school.
