The problem with trying to list what is institutional service is that, as soon as we start to list things, we exclude what is not listed. If we instead have a more purely educational perspective on postgraduate education and are based on the learning objectives to be fulfilled, you may be able to turn the discussion around. If information we put on our PhD students cannot be linked to learning outcomes (and thus give course or dissertation points), is it not then that it is departmental service that is about?
