Digitization, digitization and digital transformation of production in construction

Published: 13 August 2021

How can construction companies take advantage of the opportunities offered by modern digital technologies in production and what aspects are relevant to the enlargement of digital capabilities?

Within the Swedish research project "Uppkopplad byggplats” translated to English “The Connected construction site", researchers from Luleå University of Technology and Linköping University collaborate with several companies in the construction and telecom sector to enable sustainable efficiency of construction with digital technologies as a catalyst. As part of the project's results, two research articles have recently been published in international scientific journals. Both articles can support the continued digital development of production in construction.

The article “Introduction of a digital maturity assessment framework for construction site operations” (link below) defines a framework for digital maturity with a focus on production in construction based on the digitalization pyramid. The framework has been developed as a guide for improving the operational processes of production in construction through digital technologies.

The article “Digitalization Index: Developing a Model for Assessing the Degree of Digitalization of Construction Projects” (link below) shows how a degree of digitalization of construction projects can be calculated as support for ongoing follow-up and comparison.

Both articles focus on production in construction and contain relevant operational activities as well as organizational aspects that should be taken into account in its improvement work.

Lars Stehn, Professor in Construction Management and Building Technology, comments on the articles that companies' awareness of their development situation expressed, for example through digital maturity or degree of digitalization, forms the basis for improving digital capabilities, which in turn is the key to companies' short- and long-term digital development.
