Norway test dam safety in Luleå

Published: 18 January 2019

Representatives of the Norwegian hydropower industry have visited the MCE lab at Luleå University of Technology and participated in a unique test of a dam failure. An experiment that gave new valuable knowledge about the safety of concrete dams.

"This project deals with the development of new methods to evaluate the real strength of Scandinavian concrete dams", says Gabriel Sas, researcher and project manager at Norut Narvik also and associate professor at Luleå University of Technology.

By working with scaled-down sections from a real dam the strength of the dam can be estimated directly and very close to reality. This is a good complement to data models and simulations of the same event.

"We are very happy with the outcome of these tests, and this is largely due to the fact that the staff at Mining and Civil Engineering Lab have worked professionally with all the small details. We see The MCE Lab as a reliable and strategic test facility partner for our future work. Luleå University of Technology has a strong position in research within this area", Gabriel Sas concludes.
