Creative and sustainable urban transformation

Kiruna Sustainability Center is the name of a new innovation platform for testing and evaluating new creative solutions for a sustainable society. Luleå University of Technology will contribute to recycling and waste solutions, energy systems, socioeconomic analyzes, industrial construction, social sustainability and innovative traffic solutions.

"The city transformation offers great opportunities to think new and creative," says Joakim Norman, project manager of Kiruna Sustainability Center.

There is a lot going on in Kiruna right now. Buildings are demolished, built and moved. New roads are drawn. The 26 meter high bell tower at Kiruna town hall is being moved to new center where the new town hall is being built.

"We also have a concept called "Society Control Room" where integrated systems will give an overview of everything from traffic to energy consumption throughout the city," says Kristina Nilsson, Professor of Architecture at Luleå University of Technology.

Kiruna Sustainability Center consists of two parts, the Kiruna Innovation Platform, funded by Vinnova / EU Regional Development Fund and Testbed Kiruna, funded by the Swedish Agency for Growth.

"Next to all institutions at Luleå University of Technology will be involved in various projects with the Kiruna Sustainability Center," concludes Kristina Nilsson.
