Published: 11 September 2020

A new online course is now offered in all engineering programs at Luleå University of Technology. The purpose is to provide basic knowledge about gender equality and how it has helped the workplace. The course is given to students during their first year at the university.

- This is a new concept where we have created an interactive online course with both films and quizzes. The course is divided into three steps before examination, says Maria Uden, professor of industrial design and content manager for the new course.

The course gender equality knowledge gives the student very basic knowledge for a successful engineering career today. It is about understanding the way in which gender equality concerns both employees and managers. The course gender equality knowledge is included as a part of other courses in the engineering programs at Luleå University of Technology.

"There is also possible to choose a fast track through the course via a voluntary test", says Phillip Tretten, assistant professor of operation and maintenance technology, the initiator of this course.

By creating a common course in the subject gender equality for all engineering programmes, Luleå University of Technology can effectively live up to this requirement that originally comes from the government. The idea was developed at a workshop with educational leaders at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering and will be implemented on the entire university. The course is given in Swedish and English
