"I have practical work experience in mining and geoengineering sectors"

Published: 8 December 2021

Jenni Hooli is a new employee and working with the European Union funded project called NEXGEN-SIMS (Next Generation Carbon Neutral Pilots for Smart Intelligent Mining Systems).

What are you going to work on?

I am working with the European Union funded project called NEXGEN-SIMS (Next Generation Carbon Neutral Pilots for Smart Intelligent Mining Systems). The aim of the project is to enable more sustainable and efficient mining with the help of new and existing technologies such as BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles). In the project I am participating in Work Package (WP) 1 where I am developing a concept of underground mine design where all machines are BEVs instead of diesels. This concept includes what changes that need to be done on the existing mine design practice which include among others the layout that optimize BEVs productivity, ventilation design, fire safety management, and energy costs.

I think that my practical experience from the mining industry is useful in this project and, I am excited to be part of a project that will make mining more sustainable and hopefully will accelerate the use of new technologies in underground mining.

Tell us a little about your background

I have practical work experience in mining and geoengineering sectors. In Outokumpu Kemi mine in Finland. I worked as a miner and then as a Supervisor in the Underground Mine Control Center for nine years. I then worked as a Geotechnical Designer in Ramboll in Helsinki for two years before starting my PhD study. I got my bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with the specialization in Mining from Lapland University of Applied Sciences and master’s degree in Geoengineering from the Aalto University. I and my family are delighted to be back in the north and really excited about our move to Sweden.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time I like to knit, do different sports (gym, jogging, skating, snowboarding, biking) and spend time with my family.
