In the media: Residual product from the forest industry can give non-toxic bottom paint
Paul Christakopoulos is leading a research project that is now trying to develop an alternative to primer with copper, based on lignin from the forest industry. The project is a collaboration between Luleå University of Technology and Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg.
- It's not just about the environment, it's also an economic issue. For a medium-sized vessel that does not have a bottom paint, fuel consumption increases by 80 percent after six months. This means large increases in fuel costs and also greater carbon dioxide emissions, says Paul Christakopoulos, professor of biochemical process technology at Luleå University of Technology.
