"Living so close to the North Pole is astonishing"

Published: 2 March 2021

Maxwel Moncao from Brazil. Period of IAESTE internship: October 2019 – September 2020

My experience as an intern in the Biochemical Process Engineering group was remarkable. I worked in two distinct projects: the fractionation and valorisation of agricultural and paper-and-pulp industry by-products for the production of biofuels, prebiotics and biogas; and with microalgae cultivation for proteins production with nutraceutical application. Through the internship I was given a lot of autonomy on experiments plan and development and I learned how to use multiple laboratory equipment.

Living so close to the North Pole is astonishing, the temperatures are negative during most of the year, the days are very short in the beginning of the winter and for over three months of the summer there are no nights and since there’s a lot of nature in and around the city of Luleå, there are always nice activities to join.

After my internship I applied for a Research Engineer position at Biochemical Process Engineering group and currently I’m planning on starting a PhD at Luleå University of Technology.
