Student in focus: Tom Troell
Meet Tom Troell who has recently finished his master thesis at Master Program in Civil Engineering with a particular focus on construction.
During 2021 there was a crisis in Sweden when Cementa permit to mine limestone in Slite at Gotland had expired. The crisis led Tom to investigate how a building can be built completely without using concrete. The study was carried out together with NCC. The purpose of the study was to investigate the possibility of replacing concrete with wood in foundation of smaller buildings. To carry out the study, a literature review was conducted to describe the technical conditions as well as interviews to understand the conditions for practical implementation in construction. The conclusion is that the possibility of replacing concrete with wood as foundation material is good. The wood foundation is completely prefabricated and consists of cross laminated timber with insulation and moisture protection. The change from concrete to timber can lead to a saving of carbon dioxide emission of 73% and a time saving of 96% compared to standard concrete.
