Published: 12 May 2022

At this year's edition of this event arranged by Swedish Mining Innovation, Luleå University of Technology was awarded the prize for best doctoral dissertation, best licentiate dissertation and best degree project.

The Bergforsk Foundation awards scholarships in connection with Swedish Mining Research and Innovation Day. This year's winners were:

Unfortunately, none of the winners were present at the award ceremony this year, but they will surely be happy with the prizes anyway.

The representatives of the current mining companies were given the somewhat odd question of telling something about themselves that no one in the parish knows about, and one of these answers showed a man who takes his work to the fullest.

"I have bought my own private smelting owen that I will test at home this summer," said Anders Sand, head of research and development in mines, Boliden. Anders Sand was previously a teacher in mineral and metallurgy at Luleå University of Technology.

During the day, the green transition was discussed and how Sweden will cope with the need for, for example, the critical rare earth metals that are needed in the production of batteries. In addition to industry people, a number of members of parliament were also present this year.

In the concluding panel debate, moderated by Pär Weihed, Professor in ore geology and Vice-Chancellor at Luleå University of Technology, participants included Daniel Cios, Policy Officer, European Commission and Olli Salmi, Innovation Hub Director, EIT RawMaterials Innovation Hub CLC Baltic Sea, David Högnelid, Chief Strategy Officer, Business Area Special Products, LKAB, and Erik Jonsson, senior geologist, Swedish Geological Survey, adjunct professor at Uppsala University.
