The Water Research School's annual seminar 2022

Published: 15 June 2022

After two years of being online, the Water Research School’s annual seminar was held in person on 8-9 June 2022 at Uppsala University, providing an opportunity for PhD students and supervisors to not only learn but also to build their networks

After a short introduction activity, Gregory Garretson, Uppsala University, led a workshop on intercultural communication in academia. Later, Bengt Carlsson, Uppsala University, discussed the developments in wastewater engineering over the past 30 years, and Robert Herbert, also of Uppsala University, gave a talk on nitrogren removal from mine drainage.

The PhD students presented poster presentations for their work in an interactive session. The second day consisted of several presentations. Jenna Senecal from SLU discussed stress management during the PhD and Christian Bersel from IVL talked about cutting-edge technologies for treating pharmaceuticals in wastewater. Zeynep Cetecioglu Gurol from KTH shared her experience with wastewater-based epidemiology during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ekaterina Sokolova from Uppsala University talked about modelling-based solutions for water quality issues, while Magnus Arnell from RISE discussed the potential of digital twins in the water sector. Finally, Catherine Paul, the Water Research School’s coordinator from Lund University, gave updates about opportunities within the Water Research School, including courses and the mentor program.
