Carlota Rodriguez San Miguel is a new employee and Ph.D. student. Her research topic consists in numerical modeling of blast-induced damage around rock tunnels.

What are you going to work on?

The goal is to develop a numerical modeling process to predict blast-induced cracks in a reliable way. This will be based on experimental tests, previous investigations, and the use of technological tools. The main challenge of working on this topic is the ambition to connect the theoretical and the experimental ways of working. Also, the motivation to participate in this project is that it is useful for several disciplines, and this makes it more interesting.

Tell us a little about your background

I studied mining technology engineering bachelor's and then mining master's. During this period, I had the chance to study abroad for one year and try geology and geophysical path. In my last years, I participated as a research assistant at the university. With all of this, I developed my interest in terrain understanding. After graduating, I worked as a consultant in the mining and civil sector, in the tunneling and geotechnical groups. Before starting at LTU, I worked as a mining project engineer, providing blasting solutions to mines, either in the office or in the field.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, my main hobbies are dancing and doing arts and crafts while listening to music. I also like going to the theater and music festivals. Without any doubt, if I have the time, my favorite way to spend my free time is to travel and discover new places and cultures. Here in Luleå, I am discovering to enjoy nature and snow activities!
