Peter Eriksson visited the Virtual Reality Lab

Published: 4 May 2018

The Minister for Housing and Digital Development Peter Eriksso visited Luleå University of Technology's Virtual Reality Lab during Friday for a demonstration of how drones can be used in geoscience research and education.

Two researchers in ore geology, Tobias Bauer and Joel Andersson, have bought an advanced drone for this purpose. Much of the future geoscience work will be done in a digital environment.

"The VR lab offers an interactive environment where researchers and students can attack problems and evaluate 3D models accurately and safely. We can even collect new data here if the models are good enough. This technology increases security and reduces costs for a variety of applications and provides access to key observations on sites that were previously unavailable to us," says Tobias Bauer.

The drone will be a tool in the work of taking geoscience research and education into the digital environment.

"The drone allows us to collect high-resolution low-altitude data with different sensor technologies, which we can then analyze simultaneously in the VR lab. Soon drones will be a natural part of the geologist toolbox and I think it will go fast. We at Geosciences at Luleå University of Technology want to be in the research front with regard to this development," says Joel Andersson.

This was the minister's second visit to Luleå University of Technology within a few weeks. He was recently invited as a guest of honor at the inauguration of Mining and Civil Engineering Lab, a lab for building construction and infrastructure, see link below.
