Sven Thysell, 98 years, awards scholarships

In conjunction with his 98-year anniversary on September 2 Sven Thysell handed out scholarships from Elsa and Sven Thysells Foundation for the design of technical studies at Luleå University of Technology. Seven graduate students each received 30 000 SEK.

Niklas Bagge studying the bearing capacity of prestressed concrete bridges and have as part of this charged Mine Bridge in Kiruna to crime. Niklas Johansson studying concrete proportioning. Cosmin Popescu study strengthening for rebuilding of houses and Faez Sayahi studying early cracking of the concrete. Three absent students also received scholarships: Martin Persson, who studies the deck slabs of concrete, Jens Häggström, who study the bearing capacity of the old steel bridges and Natalia Sabourova, studying dynamic loading and degradation of bridges.

80 000 SEK was also awarded for studies of environmental friendly concrete that can heal itself if it bursts.

In connection with the distribution reported on last year's three fellows on how they spent the money:

Anders Hösthagen has studied cracking new concrete with application to the new highway bridge over Sundsvallsfjärden. Katalin Orosz studied the reinforcement of existing structures with carbon fiber and Rasoul Nilforous studied anchor bolts in concrete and has guest conducted research in Stuttgart for six months.

Besides the founder Sven Thysell  The Foundation's board consists of Mats Emborg, Erik Sundström, Jan-Erik Hallkvist and Lennart Elfgren.
