"Students will design, manufacture and race their canoes. Prizes will be awarded in several categories including construction, design and the sport competition. Our students work at the moment on developing ultra-high performance concrete material which will be combined with carbon and aramid fibers. This combination should provide sufficient strength and lightness. Most teams have over one year time to make these canoes but in our case these are only 6 weeks", says Andrzej Cwirzen, professor in Structural Engineering at Luleå University of Technology.
The students in the canoe group consist of Hampus Jelleryd, Felix Jelleryd, Adrian Ulfberg, Elias Hammarström, Niklas Törnå, Richard Skog, Savo Darwish and Olov Söderlund, all of whom are studying at the Master Programme in Civil Engineering at Luleå University of Technology. Two doctoral students in estructural engineering are also included, Magdalena Rajczakowska and Cristian Sabau.
"The difficulty is to make a sufficiently strong and light canoe, therefore we use ultra-high performance concrete," says Niklas Törnå.
The competition will be decided in Cologne on Lake Fühlinger on 9-10 June. The Master students belong to B.A.L.K. Byggtekniska Akademklubben för Luleås Konstruktörer which was recently established under umbrella of the research subject of Structural Engineering. This international competition gathers every two years participants from many European Countries giving opportunity to advertise the university as well as to create new networks and friendships.
