RIT2021 presents new partnership between university and SSC

Researchers at Luleå University of Technology will develop models to provides an even deeper understanding of the radio environment at SSC space center Esrange, located in northern Sweden. As the space industry and demand for satellite data increases globally, SSC is aiming to increase capacity within current and future services. The collaboration is taking place within the regional development project RIT2021.

– Through collaboration with researchers at Luleå University of Technology, we gain access to cutting-edge expertise and insights that will help us to increase the utilization of the unique assets at Esrange, says Petrus Hyvönen, Director of Strategic Technology and Innovations at SSC.

Attracting talent to the region

The project will be run by Tayebeh Taheri, Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering. Luleå University of Technology. With a recently completed doctorate at the university and several years of international professional experience from the industry, this became a perfect reason for her to stay in northern Sweden and continue research in her area of ​​expertise.

– This project is an interesting topic and it felt only natural for me to continue my research with the university. The space sector puts this region on the world map as it offers a relatively unique set of assets. These types of projects are excellent opportunities to attract international research talent to the region of Norrbotten and the university.

Research with societal and industry impact

For the university, this project is a way to make new research results and insights accessible to wider society, business and industry, not least in the space sector that has regional, national and global importance, says Jeep van de Beek, professor of Signal Processing.

– Our ambition is to uncover new knowledge that will benefit society and the business community. With this project, we not only deepen our collaboration with SSC and contributions to the space industry, but also create interesting and cutting-edge opportunities for our researchers and students, says Jeep van de Beek.

The research project is carried out within the project RIT2021, a three-year regional development project with the aim of creating growth in the space industry.
