World leading steel industry network visited the university

The world-leading steel industry network, the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST), visited Luleå University of Technology to get more insight into ongoing steel research at Luleå University of Technology. With 17,500 members in over 70 countries, the network aims to promote sustainable technological development in the world, in iron and steel production, processing and use.

– The members of AIST were very pleased with the visit and the insight they gained in the steel-related research that is ongoing at Luleå University of Technology. The experimental research resources and our close collaboration with industry were something that interested the group, Jens Hardell, says, Associate Professor of Machine Elements at Luleå University of Technology.

Visiting the laboratories

AIST is a globally leading organization in networking, education and sustainability programs in the steel industry. The focus of the visit to Luleå University of Technology was the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics and the Center for High Performance Steel (CHS), which conducts extensive research in close collaboration with industry. During the day, visitors from AIST were given the opportunity to see the research laboratories in Engineering Materials, Solid Mechanics and Machine Elements. There they were given an overview of the infrastructure available at Luleå University of Technology, for the development and evaluation of steel and the application of steel in various areas.

– The experimental profile within the department, with a large number of unique test equipment for material characterization in extreme conditions, combined with advanced modeling and simulation of both materials and processes gives us a unique position to tackle every step in a value chain from raw material to finished product, Jens Hardell, says.

Presented ongoing steel research


The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Pär Weihed, who began the visit with a warm welcome, told about Luleå University of Technology's various educational and research activities. Thereafter, three research topics at the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics were presented by Marta-Lena Antti, Professor of Engineering Materials, Pär Jonsén, Professor of Solid Mechanics and Jens Hardell, Assistant Professor of Machine Elements. All highlighted research efforts linked to the development and use of steel and the uniqueness of the department and the university in the field of steel research. Examples of this are new high-performance carbide-free bainitic steels, modeling and simulation of press-hardening of high-strength steel and geometry and material optimization for reduced wear in material handling.

– One of our greatest strengths is our close and interdisciplinary collaboration between different research subjects in terms of both knowledge and experimental research equipment. It gives us a combination of breadth and depth in research and creates an attractive research environment that results in good industrial collaboration and the conditions for new scientific contributions to the steel research area, Marta-Lena Antti, says.
