Students received prize for best degree project

Published: 2 June 2022

Frej Fogelström and Andreas Rosendahl, who study sustainable energy technology at Luleå University of Technology, have received a scholarship from the Energy and Environmental Technology Association for their thesis project on photovoltaic systems.

- It feels very fun and unexpected! We are very grateful for the award.

Can you tell us a little more about your degree project Solar cell systems at LTU and why you chose the subject?
We were looking for an opportunity to work with solar energy, as we think the technology is an excellent complement to the energy mix to minimize the use of fossil fuels. We have not yet reached the full potential for solar energy in Sweden, especially at northern latitudes. Silicon is the second most common mineral in the earth's crust, and if we can get recycling responsibility from installers and remove forced labor from the life cycle analysis, we believe technology is a necessary part of the transition to a sustainable society.

We understand that you have received good support and guidance. Can you tell us a little more about that?
Our supervisor Erik Elfgren has been a rock through the work. He makes it fun to work and has a broad knowledge base and a number of special areas. He motivated us to complete the work when it was sometimes difficult. he is very good and a fantastic teacher.

What benefit do you think your degree project has for the green transition?
It would be fun if the work serves as a gateway to more installations in Norrbotten, as the report shows good profitability for large installations to the north despite increased precipitation of snow and low solar orbit during the winter.

What has been the most interesting thing about the degree project?
The most interesting thing about the work has been to explore the viability of the northern sun in parallel with study visits to existing installations in the immediate area.

What has been the most difficult part of the degree project?
The most difficult part of the degree project has been getting all the quotes and information from installers on time. The pandemic also placed restrictions on interviews and visits.

What is the best thing about studying at Luleå University of Technology?
Luleå University of Technology has a fantastic study environment. Here you can be exactly who you want in the pleasant and family atmosphere on campus. Where other universities have a tendency to focus on surface and flair, knowledge and competence are always at the center of Luleå University of Technology. The contact with companies and working life in the local area is very good, and you are already from the start involved in project courses that combine practice and theory in an excellent way.

For those who want to become a good engineer and have incredible fun during their studies, Luleå University of Technology is an excellent choice. We are so grateful to have studied here!
