The following third-cycle courses are available to all doctoral students at the university in 2012

Applied Mathematics  7.5 credits

Description
Dimensional analysis and scaling; perturbation methods; calculus of variations; partial differential equations; Sturm-Liouville theory and generalized Fourier series; transform theory with applications; Hamiltonian theory and isoperimetric problems; integral equations; dynamic systems, chaos, stability and bifurcations; discrete mathematics with applications.

Statistical methods and simulation  7.5 credits

Description
Basic concepts and methods of statistics, generation of random numbers from probability distributions, integralestimation, variance stabilizing methods, bootstrapping, the Poissonprocess, Markov chains, Markov chain Monte Carlo methods including the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, Gibbs sampling. Applications in various areas of the natural, social and engineering sciences.
Implementation
The course consists of lectures and seminars. Compulsory assignments will be given continuously throughout the course. Students following the course will actively participate via collaboration and group discussions during lectures and seminars.
