Research at the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics
The department conducts influential research in several technical areas, with an emphasis on the industrial application. Research is organized in eight departments, 17 research subjects and seven centers of excellence. We have leading research in areas such as materials, energy, fluid mechanics, tribology, production development and automotive testing. We work closely with industry, not least through our centers of excellence.
Electric power engineering covers studies of sustainable systems for production of electrical energy, transport of electrical energy and the interaction between the power grid, electricity production and electricity consumption.
Energy engineering includes the development of technologies and processes for a sustainable energy supply. The research focuses on bioenergy technologies and energy efficient use in industry & society.
The subject deals with the study and mathematically describe the mechanisms for the materials and components, deformation and fracture under load. The methodology adopted is analytical, experimental and numerical.
Friction and wear cause problems such as high energy consumption and production stops. Tribology researchers at Luleå University of Technology strives at seeking answers to these tribological questions.
Polymeric Composite Materials is an area of research that in interaction with other closely related areas constitutes the basis for production and determination of the function of advanced polymer-based composite materials and structural components of today and tomorrow.
The research at LTU Division of Wood Science and Technology can be summarised as the right piece of wood in the right place using new measurement technology, advanced information processing and wood communication from felling to finished product.
