Kursnamn: Power quality – overview and details

Förkunskapskrav: General knowledge on electric power system and basic calculation methods in electric powersystems

Lärandemål:

1. Knowledge and understanding

Overall knowledge and understanding of power quality as an essential part in the design and operation of a modern power system.

Detailed knowledge and understanding of origin, propagation and consequences of the main power-quality disturbances (see list under “course contents”, below).

Overall understanding of the principles of power quality standards and regulation.

Understanding of the basic principles behind signal-processing applications in power quality, both where it concerns common methods and where it concerns research.

Knowledge and understanding of the basics and details of power-quality monitoring.

2. Skills and abilities

Ability to perform basic calculations related to the main power-quality disturbances.

Ability to interpret measurement and simulation results related to the main power-quality disturbances.

3. Assessment and attitude

Insight in practical and theoretical aspects of power quality from one of the globally-leading experts in the field.

Insight in the state of the art of research on power quality.

Insight in the kind of power-quality disturbances that are of importance for different kind of customers in modern power systems.

Insight in the need for further development and research on power quality.

Kursinnehåll:

The following subjects will be presented and discussed as part of the course:

  • Introduction and overview of power quality
  • Voltage dips
  • Voltage swells
  • Short interruptions
  • Long interruptions – reliability
  • Waveform distortion – harmonics
  • Interharmonics
  • Supraharmonics
  • Slow voltage variations – distribution planning
  • Fast voltage variations – light flicker
  • Voltage and current unbalance
  • Power quality standardization and regulation
  • Power quality monitoring
  • Signal processing of power-quality signals

For each of these subjects, the material presented will be a combination of practical issues (problems and mitigation methods), calculation and simulation methods, status of ongoing research and remaining (practical and research) challenges.

Genomförande: The course will start with three days of lectures mainly by Math Bollen. This will be followed by a number of assignments each concentrating on certain details and follow up lectures (some of which may be via video link).

The course will completely be given in English.
