Published: 1 February 2021

HC Holmberg is ranked as the world's foremost researcher in skiing. Luleå University of Technology is proud to welcome him as adjunct professor.

– There are many exciting opportunities with the combination of sports research and the university's technical profile, as well as its location in a region with a strong tradition in winter sports. Luleå University of Technology's high competence in areas such as sensor technology, data analysis, tribology and material development will definitely contribute to new knowledge gains in a field under strong development, says Hans-Christer "HC" Holmberg.

Luleå University of Technology was last year appointed to an elite sports-friendly university by The Swedish Sports Federation. Former national cross-country team manager Joakim Abrahamsson is the leader and coach for elite sports at Luleå University of Technology, with a special focus on cross-country skiing, biathlon and ski orienteering.

"Develop new areas"

Vice-Chancellor Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn is glad to welcome another prestigious recruitment, in the form of one of sports Sweden's most well-known researchers, to the University.
– By recruiting a prominent researcher with a special interest in winter sports, Luleå University of Technology can develop new and interesting areas such as performance technology, she says.

HC Holmberg defended his dissertation “Physiology of Cross-Country Skiing, with special emphasis on the role of the upper body” at Karolinska Institutet in 2005. In 2010, he became a professor of sport science at Mid Sweden University, where he founded the Swedish Winter Sports Research Centre. He has been head of training and head of education at the Swedish Ski Association. H-C Holmberg is director for R&D at the Swedish Olympic Committee and acts as a key link between academic research and Swedish elite sport. As of January 2021, he is also an adjunct professor at Luleå University of Technology.

"Translator between research and active"

In the sports world, HC Holmberg is known as the "Olympic professor" and an enormously productive sports researcher, with more than 200 scientific publications. He has contributed to around 50 book chapters and a large number of popular science publications, and is also a popular lecturer around the world. His research focuses primarily on elite sport – with a special interest in skiing – using integrated physiological and biomechanical characterization to elucidate mechanisms and improve performance.

– I look forward to conducting activity-related research in collaboration with various parts of Luleå University of Technology. Working closely with athletes and coaches provides unique opportunities to explore various exciting issues, to the benefit of both top atlethes and exercisers. This will help strengthen the University's national and international profile. Physical activity is one of the most important public health issues of the 21st century, says HC Holmberg.
