Career planning course for doctoral students and junior researchers

Together with the Grants Office, the Career Center has arranged an exclusive lecture series in career planning for doctoral students and junior researchers. As part of our continuing effort to support your doctoral studies, we invite you to take part in these modules to help prepare you for your transition from student into the labour market. Welcome!

All lectures will be given in English. The course consists of 7 classes and a final exam. The course is best suited to doctoral students during and after their third year of studies.

This course is best suited for doctoral students who have completed at least 3 years of their studies.

Time: 13:00-15:00
Location: Tentatively online. This may change depending on the situation regarding Covid-19.

1 October: Career Planning
Introduction to the course including career styles, labour market, employability, transferable skills, personal branding, and employer expectations.

8 October: Goal-Setting
Setting professional objectives for your brand and your career, examining both short and long-term goals.

15 October: CVs and Résumés
The difference between a CV and résumé and what to include in each in order to get noticed by recruiters.

22 October: Cover Letter
What to include in a cover letter to market yourself for a particular job.

5 November: Social Media
Managing your digital presence depending on where you want to work and in relation to others in your field.

12 November: Elevator Pitch
How to pitch yourself and your research. The class will also touch on presentation skills.

19 November: Job Interview and Salary Negotiation
What to prepare and how to handle various interview questions as well as what questions to ask the recruiter.

To be decided: Final Exam
In the form of a job interview. Individual feedback will be given.

The course is offered free of charge and awards 3 points (after authorization from the supervisor). A certificate of course completion will be given to all who complete the course and homework assignments.

Requirements for course completion:

Attendance at lectures (1p)
Completion of homework assignments (1p)
Final exam (1p)

Please note! If your office is normally located at a campus other than Luleå, there are a few requirements necessary in order for you to take part in this course. Please contact Heather well in advance of the course's start date in order to make arrangements.
