The qualification descriptors for PhD´s and doctorates in the fine, applied and performing arts lay down that an approved doctoral thesis is required for the award of these degrees. The doctoral thesis shall be presented and defended orally in public. A faculty examiner (opponent) shall be appointed for this presentation. Higher Education Ordinance 6:33 (2010:1064).
- The external reviewer must be an internationally recognized researcher within the subject area, qualified as docent/professor.
- The external reviewer must not be active at Luleå University of Technology.
- The external reviewer must be physically present at the public defence.
- Previous or current supervisors may not be external reviewer.
If there are special reasons, an exemption can be granted from the above. This is done on application from the Head of Department. The Head of Department describes and justifies special reasons why exceptions should be granted. The application for an exemption is treated restrictively. The Vice-Chancellor's decision-making and delegation procedures regulate the decision-making processes within the university. Exceptions can only be granted for the following: the external reviewer must be qualified as docent/professor, the external reviewer must not be active at Luleå University of Technology,
the external reviewer must be physically present at the public defence.
If the appointed external reviewer is unable to attend, the chairman of the Faculty Board concerned will, if time allowing, appoint a new external reviewer according to a proposal by the Head of Department.
If an emergency situation arises at the time of the dissertation, one of the members of the examining committee shall be appointed as external reviewer by primarily the chairman of the Faculty Board concerned and secondarily by the appointed chairperson at the dissertation.
