Information about third-cycle courses

Planning a course

Third-cycle courses are planned and carried out at the department having competence in the subject area. The examiner for the course must be qualified as docent or professor and be employed at Luleå University of Technology.

Courses published on the university website must have a course syllabus.The Head of Department will establish a course syllabus on the lines of an fixed template. Course syllabus must be registered.

For generalthird-cycle courses an evaluation must be carried out after completion of the course and a course development report must be compiled. 

The principal supervisor is the examiner for courses in the category of “courses for professional development”, for which Internal support (official) is responsible. 

Examinations in education

Examinations that form part of third-cycle courses and study programmes shall be assessed in accordance with the grading system prescribed by the higher education institution. The grade shall be determined by a teacher specially nominated by the higher education institution (the examiner). HEO 6:32 (2010:1064).

Examinations included in third-cycle studies at Luleå University of Technology are given the grade of pass or fail. Study results are reported in Ladok no later than five working days after correction of the examination is completed. The examiner for the course is responsible for doctoral students who pass being registered in Ladok via the departmental administrator.

Application and result

Registration for third-cycle courses take place according to instructions in the course syllabus.

Doctoral student who wishes to attend a course at first-cycle level/second-cycle level apply in competition with other applicants to that course.

The principal supervisor is responsible for doctoral students who pass being registered in Ladok via the department administrator. A course approved at another seat of learning than Luleå University of Technology during the third-cycle studies is transfered by the principal supervisor. The examiner and seat of learning will be stated on the course certificate

Participants on courses at third-cycle level who are admitted to third-cycle studies at a university other than Luleå University of Technology must, after passing the examination in the course, recieve a course certificate via the department responsible for the course.

Course Evaluation

An important part of the continuous quality work regarding courses is course evaluations.

Course evaluations
The university shall give the students who participate in or have completed a course an opportunity to present their experiences of and views on the course through a course evaluation organized by the university.

The university shall compile the course evaluations and inform about the results and any decisions about measures that are caused by the course evaluations. Higher Education Ordinance, 1:14


Credit transfer of prior studies

If a student at a university in Sweden has completed a certain university education with a passed result, the student has the right to credit this for university education at another university. However, this does not apply if there is a significant difference between the educations.
The same applies to students who have completed a certain education with a passed result
1. at a university or other higher education institution in Denmark, Finland, Iceland or Norway or at a party to the Council of Europe Convention of 11 April 1997 on the Recognition of Higher Education Certificates in the European Region (SÖ 2001: 46), or
2. at the Nordic University of Public Health Sciences. (SFS 2006: 1053).

A student has the right to credit other education than that referred to in section 6, if the knowledge and skills that students invoke are of such a nature and have such a scope that they mainly correspond to the education for which they are intended to be credited. A student may also be credited with corresponding knowledge and skills that have been acquired in professional activities. (SFS 2006: 1053).

The university shall test whether previous education or activities can be accepted for credit.

Only those who are students can be considered for credit, unless otherwise stated by law or regulation. Higher Education Ordinance, 6:6-8 (SFS 2010: 1064).

A doctoral student´s appplication for credit transfer must apply to courses and knowledge that are relevant to the doctoral student´s doctoral program and that address the knowledge requirements contained in the general syllabus for the current research subject, the doctoral student´s individual study plan and tthe Higher Education Ordinance´s degree objectives. The application should be made in close connection with the admission, as a decision on credit transfer early in the doctoral student´s doctoral program provides the conditions for the future planning of content in the program. Assessment and decision of the scope of the credit transfer is made course by course. 

Upon admission to latter part the docotral student applies for credit transfer of previous approved courses.

The Chairman of the relevant Faculty Board decides on any credit transfer.
