Working Group on Motor Control and Biomechanics

Luleå University of technology consists of a wide diversity of Technical and Philosophical Departments and Divisions, which allows for unique and creative cross-disciplinary collaborations within the University. Motor control and biomechanics is an area that has been identified to attract and involve researchers from several Departments in various research fields, including autonomous vehicles and robotics, computer sciences, computer animations, human-machine interaction, performing artists, sports and health sciences.

The combined expertise of this Working Group (WG) includes skills and research experience within for example: mechanics, feedback systems and related control mechanisms in machines and robotics; human anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and motor control; interactions between human and machine; computer simulations and signal analysis.


The aim of this WG is to stimulate and facilitate cross-disciplinary research, innovation and education by involving motor control and biomechanics for machines and humans but also computer animations and other related fields. Such a research topic cannot be hosted by one single Department, while this specific need for collaboration, integration and multiple subject expertise resulted in the creation of this WG. This research combination provides numerous opportunities for creative thinking and novel solutions for a big span of research and practical problems involving e.g., workers health and performance, human-machine interaction and efficient and sustainable machines and vehicles. 

Currently, the WG is aiming to establish a number of key projects in the field in order to enable the involvement of additional Industrial and Academic partners for expanding the group's activities, while targeting real life needs.

Who we are

The WG on Motor Control and Biomechanics has been established as a multi-disciplinary group with the ability to integrate activities from various Departments. Currently members of the group are coming from Healt, Learning and Technology (HLT), the Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering (SRT), the Arts, Communication and Education (KKL) and the Business Administration, Technology and Social Sciences (ETS) Departments at LTU, in order to enable a common research agenda and provide scientific and technological excellence in the field. The WG has a constant open invitation for all interesting Academic and Industrial partners to come and join forces in the direction of the WG's activities.

The WG has access to fully equipped labs in multi-disciplinary areas, while it is also worth to note that the group poses two labs with high speed localization cameras for 3D motion analysis. One already established for the human motion analysis (The Human Health and Performance Lab) at HLT and the second one to be established within June 2014 in the Field Robotics Lab at SRT for testing and evaluations real life vehicles and operations.

On Going and Upstarting Projects

  • New Understanding of Motor Control and Falls by Novel Postural Sway Analysis, Robotics and Mathematical Modelling

Falls and fear of falling pose major threats to health and independence among elderly people. Our objective is to gain further knowledge regarding balance control aspects on fall risk and fear of falling by 1) assessing postural sway and control mechanisms in static and dynamic tests, 2) creating a robotic humanoid with artificial muscles and electronic control systems and 3) establishing a mathematical formulation of balance control and experimentally evaluate it on the robotic humanoid. This will be undertaken by a close co-operation between Physiotherapy and Automatic Control researchers. The construction of a humanoid robot designed to mimic human biomechanics and motor control system will allow us to test various motor control theories and also to investigate the effects on the postural control and postural sway when perturbations, sensory and motor reductions and noise is experimentally introduced, mimicking physiological changes related to ageing.

  • Pneumatic Dancer Stage I - IV

The aim of the project is to make a feasibility study on creating a robotized dancer, where novel actuator technology will be utilized, in the form of Pneumatic Muscle Actuators (PMAs). The case study will focus in physically and naturally recovering the elegance and the beauty of Vaslav Nijinsky's dance movements. Currently the project has been funded by Innovative Arts excellence area of LTU.

  • An integrated E-health system for web based 3D motion analysis

The aim of the project is to develop a user friendly, cheap and accurate system for quantitative assessment of 3D motions and feedback training. The system shall be possible to be utilized in the clinic but also at distance via the internet by physiotherapists, medical doctors, ergonomics etc. Currently the project has been funded by Enabling ICT excellence area of LTU.
