The AI ​​solutions of the future in the focus of new education

Luleå University of Technology is starting a Master Programme in Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI). This program is nationally and internationally unique for two major reasons: (i) it´s the first master programme on Applied AI and (ii) introduces for the first time a specialization that combines AI with Neuroscience. The education starts in the autumn 2021.

– The Master Programme in Applied Artificial Intelligence, aims at those who really want to understand AI. In the field of machine learning and AI, students get to learn the basics of how we with machines can simulate the intelligence of humans. Our students get to learn how effectively maths, computers and interactive systems, can help us in everyday life, Marcus Liwicki says, Chaired Professor of Machine Learning at Luleå University of Technology and teacher of the Master Programme.

Learn to develop applications of AI
The goal of the education is for students to learn how to develop self-learning intelligent systems and responsible ethical applications of AI in real-life use cases of benefit to industrial, research, educational, social, and health aspects of human life and society.

– We want to give the students in our upcoming education knowledge about the future technology in AI – with a direct connection to reality, says George Nikolakopoulos, Chaired Professor in Robotics and AI at Luleå University of Technology and teacher of the Master Programme.

George Nikolakopoulos and his research team at Luleå University of Technology, as part of the NASA/JPL’s team CoSTAR, won the biggest worldwide competition in Robotics and AI: the Subterranean Challenge. The second stage of the competition was focusing on urban underground environments. This competition is really pushing the limits of today´s AI since the robots must operate in very difficult environments, navigates and explores autonomously.

Students are offered two specializations
The Master Programme in Applied Artificial Intelligence provides both basic Master engineering skills and specialization competence. During the first three years, students gain knowledge in Machine learning, AI, applied AI, Robotics, Deep Learning, Neural Networks, Signals and Automatic Control. In the last two years the students have the opportunity to choose to continue their studies in one of the 2 offered specializations: Industrial AI or AI and Neuroscience.

– There are so many incredible areas in society that you can work in with applied AI. I will teach the course on neurochemistry which is about the chemical structure and function of the brain. I want the students to get an interest in the subject area and important tools that help them further develop their AI knowledge, Josefine Enman says, Senior Lecturer and Head of Division in Biochemical Process Engineering, at Luleå University of Technology and teacher of the Master Programme.
