Kempe foundation supports AI research

Published: 4 December 2019

Luleå University of Technology continues to strengthen its AI research. The Kempe foundation will fund six post-doctoral researches over the next two years.

In total, the Kempe foundation will contribute with 4.2 MSEK for research related to AI. The contribution will steer the AI research at Luleå University of technology in a continuous positive direction. During the next decade, Luleå aims at becoming a flagship region in applied artificial intelligence and innovation. The overarching goal is to improve the quality of productivity, innovation, engineering and every form of activity that AI will influence, for example in everyday life, health, education and arts. Furthermore, the goal is to widen the AI activities at a national and European level, creating a direct sustainable impact in society.

– We want to create a critical mass of researchers around the thematic area of applied AI. We are a strong player in many areas of research and innovation related to AI, says Marcus Liwicki, Professor of Machine Learning.

– These post-doctoral researchers will focus on a broad variety of subjects, everything from game technologies and process IT, to datacenter automation, robotics and health.

The Applied AI Excellence Centre at Luleå University of Technology coordinates the six post-doctoral researchers. The vision is to establish multidisciplinary projects at the university and in collaboration with industry, demonstrating applied AI.
